Known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berat blends history, culture, and authentic Albanian hospitality in a way that feels both timeless and immersive.
Here’s a detailed account of my 2-day itinerary in Berat, including where to stay, eat, and what to do.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Berat’s Historic Charm
I arrived in Berat and checked into Hotel Beratinus 1, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. The hotel offers a perfect combination of traditional architecture and modern comfort. The rooms were clean, well-designed, and maintained a charming Ottoman style that fits perfectly with Berat’s historical atmosphere. What stood out most was the exceptional service and warm hospitality, making it an ideal accommodation choice for anyone visiting Berat.
After settling in, I headed out to explore the city. One of the best ways to experience Berat is simply by walking. The pedestrian boulevard (Pedonale) is lively and inviting, lined with cafes where you can stop for a coffee and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of the city. It’s a great place for people-watching and soaking in the local culture.
Later in the day, I made my way up to the Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit)—arguably the most iconic attraction in the city. This is not just a castle, but a living neighborhood filled with houses, churches, and museums. Inside the castle, you can explore several historical museums, including the Onufri Museum, which showcases stunning religious artwork. Walking through the cobblestone streets offers incredible views of the city and the Osum River below.
Day 2: Food, Views, and Authentic Experiences
The second day started with a visit to Kodra e Gjelbër Agrotourism, a must-visit if you’re looking for traditional Albanian food in Berat. Located in a peaceful natural setting, this restaurant focuses on bio, locally sourced ingredients. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful—classic dishes prepared with care and authenticity. It’s the kind of place where you truly experience the richness of Albanian cuisine.
In the afternoon, there’s plenty more to do around Berat. The city offers a mix of cultural activities, nature walks, and relaxing spots. You can visit nearby parks, take photos of the historic Mangalem and Gorica neighborhoods, or simply enjoy another coffee along the Pedonale.
For dinner, I chose Restaurant Antigoni, which is well-known for its location. While the food itself didn’t fully meet expectations, the view was absolutely breathtaking. Overlooking the illuminated city of Berat at night, the atmosphere alone makes it worth a visit. If you value ambiance and scenery, this spot delivers one of the best panoramic views in Berat.

One of the most striking elements of Berat is the Gorica neighborhood architecture, which perfectly complements the famous Mangalem quarter across the Osum River. While Mangalem is often associated with the iconic “City of a Thousand Windows” view, Gorica offers a quieter yet equally captivating perspective. The houses here are built in tiered rows climbing up the hillside, with stone facades, wooden balconies, and large symmetrical windows that reflect traditional Ottoman-era architecture in Albania. These windows—lined closely one above the other—create the illusion of hundreds, even thousands, watching over the city, which is how Berat earned its nickname. Walking through Gorica feels more intimate and less crowded, giving you a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship, the harmony between nature and construction, and the historical continuity that defines Berat’s unique urban landscape.
